Obituary For Clare Elizabeth Pelekai
CLARE ELIZABETH PELEKAI
10-26,1926 – 01-21, 2021
Clare Elizabeth Pelekai, 94, of Las Vegas, NV (formerly of Wailuku, Maui, HI and Blaine Wa.) passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on January 21, 2021.
Mrs. Pelekai was born in Glasgow, Scotland and at age 18 immigrated to Canada. After living in Vancouver BC and raising her children, she moved to Honolulu, Hi and met her husband Frank Pelekai. They lived in Waikiki where she assisted spouses coming to
Honolulu to visit their military husbands while on R&R.
In 1970 her husband Frank transferred to Maui with his job at Hawaiian Airlines. After Frank’s retirement from the Airlines in 2000, they decided to leave Maui and bought a retirement home at Birch Bay in Blaine, WA where they lived for 20 years enjoying their golden years together. They spent a lot of time cruising with their friends, visiting their children and grandchildren, and traveling to their second home in Las Vegas. They moved permanently to a retirement community in Las Vegas last year.
Mrs. Pelekai had several careers throughout her life including Real Estate Agent, Tour Escort, Server at The Jessie Nakaooka Show at the Maui Lu, Demonstrator for Sears, and Survey worker for Ward Research. But her main happiness in life was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a fantastic sewer and made many costumes for Iola Balubar’s Halau Hula O Ke Ola Ali’i O Ke
Kai, and traveled with the Halau as wardrobe mistress. She was an avid square dancer and also made dance outfits for her and Frank. She made many knitted sweaters and baby outfits and also crocheted blankets treasured by every one of her children and grandchildren. She loved to entertain at home inviting friends and family to share her delicious meals. She loved to sing her Scottish tunes and could sing Hawaiian songs and dance Hula. She always gave wise advice, had a fabulous sense of humor and would do anything to help someone in need. Her eyes sparkled with the joy of life, her arms were full of hugs and her heart was full of love. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Frank K. Pelekai and children, Lynn (Dennis) LeRoy, London, Ont. CA.; Wendy (Thomas) Perry, Kahului, Hi; Karen Hartvig-Nielsen, Blaine Wa.; Niels(Karina) Hartvig-Nielsen, Las Vegas, NV; Lesly Hartvig-Nielsen, Clearwater, BC. CA.; David (Carol) Pelekai, Las Vegas, NV. and 17 Grandchildren, 30 Great-Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren plus 7 sisters and 1 brother.
Celebration of Life and scattering of ashes will be held at a later date at Birch Bay, Blaine, Wa
